Cherif Chekatt, suspected of being the sniper who killed three people and wounded 12 others in Strasbourg (France) on Tuesday (11), was killed Thursday night (13) by police in a warehouse of the neighborhood where he had been last seen.
The 29-year-old man was wanted nearly 48 hours ago because he arrived with an automatic weapon and a knife in the perimeter where a traditional Christmas market is organized and attacked. Dozens of people before exchanging shots with police at two points of their escape.
Born in Strasbourg, he had been convicted 27 times in France, Germany and Switzerland, mainly for property offenses. He had been out of jail since 2017.

Chekatt has been under surveillance by the French intelligence services since 2016, looking for signs of religious radicalization. According to witnesses, the author allegedly shouted "Allah Akbar" (God is greater) at the time of the attack.
According to a statement from the Islamic State circulating in networks of extremists, Chekatt "was a member of the IE soldiers and conducted this operation in response to calls to attack citizens of the international coalition "fighting the group in Syria and Iraq.
More than 700 men participated in the search of the suspect, including on the other side of the German border – Strasbourg is on the border between the two countries.
