The Metropolitan Cathedral of Campinas is located in a central part of the city, very animated at lunchtime, during the mbad. According to the municipal health department, the shooter committed suicide after firing.
The motivation of the crime is not yet known and the identity of the gunman has not yet been confirmed
A woman who was on the scene said in an interview with GloboNews there was a midday mbad when the shooter invaded the church and started shooting "everywhere". "I was in shock," he said. The cathedral is still closed to the care of victims and police investigations.
This is not the first time that Campinas is the scene of a recent mbad murder of great national significance. In the last hours of 2016, lab technician Sidnei Ramis de Araújo invaded a New Year's party armed with two guns and killed his ex-wife, his 8-year-old son and 10 others. Then he shot himself in the head.
