An attacker attacked the mayor of the Polish city of Gdansk, Pawel Adamowicz, in front of hundreds of people at a charity event on Sunday. The mayor has undergone surgery and is now fighting between life and death, according to doctors.

The attack occurred shortly before 8 pm local time, before several hundred people. The attacker invaded the scene where Adamowicz was located, attacked him with a large knife and showed the weapon to the public.

He then took the microphone and claimed, according to France Presse, that he had been unjustly imprisoned by the former center government, who would have "tortured" him in prison. "That's why Adamowicz will die," he said.

The attacker was arrested shortly e time after the crime by security agents without resistance. Adamowicz was resuscitated on the spot before being transferred to the University Hospital.

Adamowicz, 53, has been mayor of the port city of Gdansk since 1998. This event was part of a fundraising campaign to buy hospital equipment.

"The patient is alive," Tomasz Stefaniak, a surgeon who operated on Adamowicz at Gdansk University Hospital, told the press that "his condition is very serious" and that "the next few hours are decisive ".

According to a spokesman for the Gdansk police, the gressor is a 27-year-old man living in this Baltic city of about half a million inhabitants.

Several media reported that the suspect had served five years' imprisonment for four armed attacks against the Gdańsk banks and that his mental health had been seriously affected during his stay in prison.

The Civic Platform (PO), a former government party, supported the re-election of Adamowicz in the 2018 municipality. The open police investigation will seek to identify the "means" which allow the attacker to access the podium.
