Family visits to inmates of the Central State Penitentiary (PCE) were suspended on Saturday (5) and Sunday (6) due to the death of a prisoner with meningitis. Luiz Freideriano de Souza, 48, died on Saturday.
However, three days later, the report pointed out that the cause of death was pneumococcal meningitis with a low probability of infection.
According to the Secretariat of State for Public Security (Sesp), visits should resume quickly and suspension is a form of prevention, as it is not certain whether the disease is contagious or not.
Pneumococcal meningitis is a type of severe meningitis caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae, which is the same as that which can cause the development of pneumonia.
Generally, this type of bacteria is present in the nose or throat, but it remains dormant, causing no type of symptoms.
Vaccination is the best way to prevent pneumococcal meningitis because the disease can not be transmitted from an infected person to a healthy person.
