A powerful submarine earthquake of magnitude 7.5 struck the Southeast Loyalty Islands, an archipelago of the French territory of New Caledonia in the South Pacific, with the possibility of a tsunami in a radius of 1,000 km. around the epicenter, said the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake was recorded at 10 km deep and about 168 km east of Tadine, on the island of Maré in Loyalty, according to the USGS, an institute that monitors the earthquakes around the world.

There are no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The authorities of New Caledonia order "the immediate evacuation" of the population settled on the coast.

There is a tsunami warning within 1000 km of the epicenter of the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Center announced. Giant waves considered dangerous can reach the Australian coast, Fiji, New Zealand, Vanuatu, among other countries.

The strong earthquake was preceded by another magnitude 6 earthquake and a magnitude 5.9 aftershock is recorded in the main earthquake.

New Caledonia is located in the region known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region prone to tremor.
