Originally from Cachoeira do Sul, 200 km from Porto Alegre, Garcia studied social communication at the PUC in Rio Grande do Sul and worked in the extinct branch of Jornal do Brasil in Porto Alegre. He made his debut in the now defunct television, Manchete, in 1983, and in 1988 he started working at Globo.
