Manaus – The Amazonas government is stepping up malaria control and control actions in the state, to contain the number of cases of the disease, which has increased again since last year. In 2017, 81,302 cases were registered, 65% more than the previous year. In the first half of 2018 (up to June 21), 32,503 cases were recorded, highlighting the municipalities of Alto Rio Negro, where the state's civil defense decreed, on June 18, an abnormal situation, characterized as due to the disease in the area.
With 11,765 notifications, São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Barcelos and Santa Isabel do Rio Negro represent 53% of the cases of malaria in the interior this year. São Gabriel da Cachoeira is the Amazon municipality with the largest number of cases (7,980), followed by Manaus, with 3,836. Barcelos recorded 2,208 and Santa Isabel 1,577. One of the concerns is the growth, in Upper Rio Negro, of P. falciparum malaria, a lethal type of the disease.
According to the State Secretary for Health, Francisco Deodato, the decree on the emergency situation will help municipalities and the state to make possible the purchase of inputs and equipment to intensify local actions. "On behalf of the state, we will do all that is necessary to help the municipalities. We are, for example, with a process of buying impregnated mosquito nets, to distribute among the local population. allow the hiring of surveillance personnel, "said the secretary.
In addition to Alto Rio Negro, 13 other municipalities are among the top priorities in the fight against malaria, including the capital Manaus. For these priority municipalities, the State Department for Health (Susam), together with the Ministry of Health (MOH), is increasing the value of retrocessions for this purpose. The increase, granted by the Member States, should vary from 20% to 50%.
Francisco Deodato pointed out that since the beginning of the year, the State Government, with the support of the Member States, is stepping up its actions in the field of epidemiological surveillance and that malaria is one of the diseases treated in priority. In January 2018, the government of Amazonas sent new vehicles and boats to 21 municipalities to strengthen surveillance actions.
The work is focused, mainly, on the identification of cases for badisted treatment of patients and in the fight against the transmitting mosquito, Anopheles. Space fogging with smoke-like vehicles and home spraying intensify, especially in rural communities, but also in urban areas.
"We now have 1,000 microscopic points throughout the state for laboratory testing and early diagnosis of malaria, an essential action to identify, treat cases and thus disrupt the cycle of mosquitoes," said the CEO. of the Foundation. Health Surveillance (FVS), infectious doctor Bernardino Albuquerque. According to him, the drug is offered at the microscopy station where the test is done.
Amazonas now has 10,768 sites registered in the Malaria Epidemiological Surveillance System (SIVEP-Malaria of the Ministry of Health). Of these, 4,487 localities have active malaria transmission. The state is considered the greatest risk of disease transmission in Brazil, which is mainly concentrated in riparian and indigenous areas.
Discontinued in 2017
The increase of malaria is a phenomenon that occurs throughout the legal Amazon and that has several causes. One is the growth of the disease in neighboring countries, such as Venezuela.
Francisco Deodato also points to internal causes, such as the discontinuity of public health policies in recent years, caused by the economic crisis and political instability that led to the exchange of governors and managers of the region throughout the state. In 2017, for example, three governors took office at Amazonas and four health secretaries, after police operations investigated the diversion of resources in the area. The change of manager also in the municipalities caused a change in the monitoring teams responsible for carrying out the control actions.
"Political instability has relegated the municipalities to the abandonment. Many remained throughout the year without receiving the resources of the state government for medium and high complexity, there are about 17 months, with the result that town halls had to put their own resources in hospitals, which hampered the prevention of diseases, "said the secretary, noting that the problem has been corrected by the current management, which took the relay in October 2017. to be transmitted.
Alto Rio Negro is a priority
In São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Santa Isabel do Rio Negro and Barcelos, the FVS has carried out extensive prevention and control work with local teams and the army. A working group with agency technicians has been active in municipalities since the beginning of May. Very low volume vehicles (smoke) were shipped to the area, laboratory supplies and rapid tests for malaria diagnosis, pumps for space and home fogging, drugs and other supplies.
Symptoms and prevention
High fever, intense chills, hot flashes, sweat, headaches, body aches, lack of appetite, yellow skin, and tiredness are some of the main symptoms of the disease. . At the sign of the symptoms, the person must look for a health center or a microscopy station to pbad the examination. There is no vaccine against malaria, and the recommendation is that the population does not stay in risk areas such as streams and forests in the late afternoon and early evening. . Or, if you stay, avoid mosquito bites, with repellents, pants, and long-sleeved shirts and the use of impregnated mosquito nets.
