As a result of a derailment of an electric tram, 28 people were injured in Lisbon on Friday night (14), in the Lapa neighborhood.
According to witnesses, the vehicle failed to stop in a turn and overturned. The tram was completely destroyed.
The wounded were taken to the hospital – among them a six-month-old baby and a seven-year-old child. According to the Portuguese channel TVI 24, the victims were injured in the chest, face and eyes
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was at the scene of the accident.
A witness told the Portuguese newspaper Publico that he had heard an accident and people screaming when the train derailed in a curve.
The company that operates the city's electric streetcars, Carris, announced that it would investigate the causes of the accident.
From the 18th century, trams are one of the tourist attractions of the Portuguese capital.
The city has 11 lines built by these electric vehicles. It is estimated that more than one million pbadengers are transported each year by cable cars.
