The Angolan Parliament approved a new penal code, the first since independence, which provides no sanction for homobadual relations and allows abortion in some cases, said Thursday (24) Human Rights Watch (HRW ).
The former Penal Code, in force since 1886 and unreformed at any time after the independence of Portugal in 1975, provided for a sentence of imprisonment of six months to three years for those who practiced "unnatural acts", a formula widely used in legislation to criminalize same-bad relationships.

The decriminalization of homobaduality is one of the novelties of the Penal Code adopted by the Angolan Parliament on Thursday after ten years of debate.
The discussion on abortion was one of the most controversial and prevented the approval of the Penal Code in the previous legislature, which ended in 2017, for lack of support of the largest opposition force, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA).
Finally, it has been decided that the new legal framework will penalize two to eight years in prison when abortion is performed outside the contemplated cases: danger to the life or health of the mother or fetus and rape.
In some previous versions of the bill, abortion was contemplated up to ten weeks of gestation.
