On Saturday (15), Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the recognition of West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, although he currently maintains his embbady in Tel Aviv.
"The Australian government decided that Australia would recognize West Jerusalem, where the Knesset and many government institutions, such as the capital of Israel, are located," Morrison said in a speech delivered at the weekend. Sydney Institute.
Morrison said that the move of the Tel Aviv embbady in West Jerusalem would take place when it would be "convenient", although he warned that his government was already seeking a seat.
"Recognizing our commitment to a two-state solution, the (Australian) government also intends to recognize the aspirations of Palestinians for a future state whose capital is located in West Jerusalem," said Mr. Morrison.
The president insisted that the decision respect the Australian compromises with the two-state solution, as well as the resolutions of the (United Nations) Security Council.
"What we want to say is that we have to keep moving forward.This stagnant stagnation must be broken," said Morrison in justifying this decision criticized by the Labor opposition and causing friction with Indonesia, historical ally of Palestine.
