In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, screenwriter Eric Heisserer reveals that the monster Bird Box was shown in a scene removed from the film.
Heisserer stated that the scene was a producers' requirement, and then he wrote a scene where Malorie (Sandra Bullock) had a nightmare where she was attacked by the creature. "It was a green man with a horrible baby face" The director Susane Bier said the scene had been removed because it could become fun easily, and not show the monster would be more frightening:
Whatever these creatures, they arouse their deepest fear. And the deepest fear of everyone will be different from that of another person. I think that creating a concrete way to illustrate that weakens the concept. Trying to illustrate this makes no sense, it would be a bad decision.
