In 2018, none of the 100 most visited cities by foreigners in the world was Brazilian. The conclusion is drawn from the Top 100 City Destinations 2018 study, launched by Euromonitor, one of the world's largest data badysis centers. Last year, Rio de Janeiro was the only Brazilian city on the list, in 94th place – it has now fallen to 101.
This does not necessarily mean that tourism in Brazil is declining, but that other cities of the world are growing more than us. For the second year in a row, Hong Kong leads the league with 29.8 million visitors and 7% growth over 2017.
National parks, 8,000 kilometers of beaches, mountains, waterfalls and dunes. Despite all its potential, tourism in Brazil is growing slowly. In 2014, the year of the World Cup, we crossed for the first time the barrier of 6 million foreign visitors. For comparison: in the same year, Thailand – an Asian country whose area is 16 times smaller than that of Brazil – received 24 million tourists. In contrast, Bangkok ranks second with 23.6 million euros, an increase of 5.5% over 2017.
London ranks third and is the busiest on the European continent with 20 , 7 million visitors. Powerful tourist power for decades, Paris ranks 6th with 16.8 million euros, behind Singapore and Macao in China. From 2017 to this year, the percentage of growth in the number of visitors to the French capital has been halved compared to the previous survey.
After the other ten cities, Dubai is the most turbulent city in the Middle East. With its huge skyscrapers glazed in the middle of the desert and its vocation to be the great Arab of Las Vegas, the city has gained two places in the ranking. It has grown from 15.7 to 16.6 million tourists between 2017 and 2018.
The next city on the list is Istanbul, ranked 12th with 12.1 million travelers.
With a shy increase of 3.1% – from 13.1 to 13.5 million visitors – New York remains the only city in America at the top of the rankings (8th position). Two other Asian giants close the list, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Shenzen in China. Of note is the staggering growth of Delhi in India from 53rd to 13th in two years, with an increase of 7.4 million visitors in 2016, to reach 12.5 million this year.
To Watch
Among the badyzes done by Euromonitor, some call attention. The report highlights four cities to watch closely over the next few years. Mumbai, India, is expected to enter the Top 10 in Asia next year, with a 19% increase in planned arrivals. Already, in Portugal, Porto arrives for the first time in the Top 100 this year and with rewards such as the best European destination 2018 won at this year's World Travel Awards, is expected to further develop considerably
The L & # 39; study highlights two other highlights. Osaka, Japan, won 113 places in the standings between 2012 and 2017 – now in 30th place. With a high influx of Chinese visitors, it is expected to increase by around 13% next year. Of course, the city can still greatly benefit from the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Finally, it should be noted the 32% increase in the number of arrivals to Jerusalem in 2017 and the expectation of Reach 38% this year. Thus, the city went from 75th to 63rd in the world rankings.
