"Guys, it's very difficult to take out this formula of the equipment, I try to wash it, but everything gets stuck in the propellers." This is how Naima Orra, trainee at the National Center for Research on Energy and Materials (CNPEM) in Campinas, discovered the formula of a non-toxic glue made from cane bagbade at Sugar and materials discarded by pasta companies
After listening to Orra's report, the researcher of the National Rubia Nanotechnology Laboratory Figueiredo Gouveia decided to start a specific research to improve the study and create a new glue. A month later, both reached the final formula, patented in Brazil this year. The durable Brazilian glue must be registered overseas in 2019 under the responsibility of the two researchers – Naima Orra, now holding a master's degree in France.
If the patent is marketed, half of the funds will go to the innovation fund of the CNPEM social organization;
In addition to having the same effectiveness of other glues already marketed today, the new formula is made from the simple blend of three ingredients: latex, nanocellulose and lignin. One of the advantages is that the latter two elements are often rejected on a large scale by sugar mills and cane refineries: the reuse of what would be rejected is sustainable and still has to make production cheaper. " said Rubia Gouveia in an interview. BBC News Brasil
The researcher says that glue can benefit a chain of industries that use the product, such as automotive, furniture, construction and toys. Of the three materials used for its production, latex should be the only one that is still extracted from trees, mainly rubber trees.
Nanocellulose is now widely obtained in Brazil from eucalyptus. For the production of the new glue, however, the substance was extracted from the cane bagbade.
Lignin is obtained from a liquid called "black liquor", usually discarded in the paper industries except the most biting. Usually uses the substance for the production of energy. For iso, it is necessary to cook the substance with high temperature and high pressure soda
Large scale production
Fabiano Rosso, research director of the Lignina project of Suzano Report, the largest producer of paper Latina printing and writing, said that a fraction of 3% of the lignin produced by the Limeira plant in the interior of São Paulo is currently separated, purified , modified, turned into resin and sold to wood and MDF factories [19659002] The number is equivalent to about 20 thousand tons. The rest is burned to return the steam, power a turbine and produce electricity, which feeds the industry and still generates surpluses that are sold. If the experiments demonstrate the viability of the super glue, much of the substance produced by Suzano Report could be used for this purpose.
The news that a glue can be produced from the lignin encouraged Rosso. "I do not know this research, but I will try to know and understand its application and what researchers are doing."
"I do not know this research, but I will try to know and understand its application and what researchers I'm interested in not only in the application, but also in the production of this final product. I see this as a viable way to produce on a large scale, "said Rosso. Suzano Report produces 20,000 tons per year of one of the main products used in the manufacture of sustainable glue
Formaldehyde
In addition to economic and ecological benefits, the durable glue does not use chemical solvents derived from petroleum glues used industrially today. The best known and the most damaging is formaldehyde, clbadified as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1984 and is present in most industrial glues, including those used by shoemakers and glaziers . The smell of the substance can cause nausea, headaches and, in more severe cases, even hallucinations and mental confusion.
The use of formaldehyde has been banned in US and Canadian industries, the only ones that, on the Swedish side, also produce lignin on a large scale.
according to researcher Rubia Gouveia, the lasting glue does not only focus on industrial use, but also on commercial, household and school use
"It is possible to make changes to its use in different situations, in this way, the glue could be used in the Automobile, furniture, textile industry, even in schools and offices, "says Gouveia. ] The glue has demonstrated its adhesive power in laboratory tensile tests.
The next step is to make adaptations to the formula and test the glue at high and low temperatures. An adaptation will also be made to glue glbades and benefit more industrial sectors.
