Two South African men accused of cannibalism were sentenced on Wednesday to life imprisonment for murder after being convicted of "the most heinous crime."
Nino Mbatha, 33, and Lungisani Magubane, 32, were convicted of murdering Zanele Hlatshwayo, 24, last year.
Mbatha, a traditional healer, was arrested after returning to the police station in Estcourt, a city in KwaZulu-Natal province. He was carrying a bag containing a human leg and a hand. He told police that he "was tired of eating human flesh"
. The police refused to believe his allegations until he drove them to a house where more body parts were found.
There is no direct law against cannibalism, but mutilating a corpse and being in possession of human tissue are criminal offenses.
