Cable TV loses 550,000 customers in 2018 in Brazil

SÃO PAULO – In 2018, pay television in Brazil lost 3.03% of its customers, totaling 549,833 contracts. The data come from Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency)

The pay-TV service in the country is led by the groups Claro / NET, Sky, Oi and Vivo. Together, the four companies held 17,050,679 active contracts in December 2018. Nearly 50% of the contracts – 8,600,763 contracts – related only to the Claro / NET group.

Of the companies in the segment, Oi is the only one to have increased in the last 12 months, with a gain of 92,365 signatures (+ 6.12%).

There are also small suppliers, such as Algar, Cabo and Nossa TV.

The states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais own the largest pay-TV markets in the country, with 36.81%, or 13.52% of the total, and 8.85% of contracts, respectively .

Compared to December 2017, the State of Maranhão registered the largest increase in the number of service customers, about + 27.29%, or 48,041 signatures.

The states of Amazonas (+ 4.05%), Tocantins (+ 3.69%), Pará (+ 3.61%) and Ceará (+ 3.59%) also experienced a growth.
