Canada has reduced staff at its embbady in Havana by almost half due to symptoms of unknown origin that some diplomats and their families are suffering from, said Wednesday in Ottawa.
Authorities reported that 14 Canadians living in Cuba – embbady employees and family members – had headaches since the beginning of 2017, as well as 25 American diplomats and relatives.
All describe the same symptoms: nausea, severe migraines, buzzing in the ear and vision problems. Until now, however, neither Canada nor the United States has been able to find the causes of this mysterious malaise.
The Canadian government conducted further medical examinations with its diplomatic staff in Havana and the results confirmed a fourteenth case, the Canadian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
According to the CBC public television, eight Canadian diplomats continue to perform their duties in Havana after the withdrawal of the others.
The government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recalled the "positive and constructive relationship" with Cuba, noting that "Cuban authorities have been cooperating closely with Canada since the first symptoms appeared in the spring. 2017 ".
