A 33-year-old award-winning journalist left the German weekly "Der Spiegel" after admitting to falsifying characters, sources and large-scale statements in at least 14 articles.
Claas Relotius, who has worked for other German and Swiss publications, has won numerous awards, such as the "Journalist of the Year" awarded by CNN in 2014.
The journalist, who resigned Monday, said he regretted his actions and was deeply ashamed, according to the magazine.
"I am sick and I need help," he said.
Relotius was a freelancer in "Der Spiegel" magazine, but had been hired full-time in 2017. The Hamburg-based magazine reported that Relotius had written nearly 60 published articles in print or online since 2011. Doubts about the veracity of his reports appeared in November after a journalist who was working with him on a story about a border militia in Arizona had discovered that supposed interviews never happened. After that, the magazine launched an internal investigation.
The magazine's deputy editor, Mathieu von Rohr, said that he was "angry, horrified, shocked". "Claas Relotius claimed that he had deceived us all," he said on Twitter.
The Union of German Journalists (DJU) called this case "the biggest scandal of journalism fraud since Hitler's newspapers", which the German magazine "Stern" published in 1983.
