HackerGiraffe's attack takes advantage of the fragile connections of smart devices such as Chromecasts or Smart TVs, also connected to routers with weak configurations. The hacker's script renames the devices and attempts to transmit a YouTube video with an alert prompting victims to change their behavior and redirecting users to a link offering help.
The solution to avoid this attack can be as simple as changing the router settings so you do not need to unnecessarily expose devices, change ports 8008 and 8443, and disable features like Universal Plug and Play unless that they are strictly necessary, Below is the Engadget citing a Google source.
Under the "educational" message, there is still a line to encourage users to subscribe to the PewDiePie channel. According to Cnet more than 5,500 devices could have been affected so far.
The hacker in question is the same who took thousands of printers to print pages in order to support the popular youtuber.
