A Thai Navy diver who participated in the rescue efforts of the 12 boys trapped in a flooded cave died while trying to bring supplies to the group. The death of an experienced soldier highlights the risks of rescuing teens – some do not know how to swim and everyone will have to learn the basics of diving.

"His mission was to provide oxygen, and he was left without enough on the way home," said Chiang's interim governor Rai.
Saman was removed from the cave by his diving companion, but they could not revive him. The level of oxygen in the inner tube where the boys are in the cave has dropped to 15%. The normal level is 21%. As a result, the teams decided to bring oxygen to the place.
The boys, aged 11 to 16, and their football coach entered the cave system 12 days ago. They ended up getting stuck when a storm flooded much of the site and blocked the main exit.
Nine days later, British divers who came to Thailand to help with the rescue found the young clusters on a rock four kilometers from the entrance to the cave.
Saman, 38, was a retired NCO, but he returned to the Navy specifically to participate in the rescue operation. Officials said his funeral would be sponsored by the King of Thailand.
The deceased diver was, according to his friends, a committed runner and a cyclist.

"In the interior of the cave, the conditions are difficult," said Commander Arpakon Yookonghaew. "On returning, after leaving the oxygen bottles, Saman Gunan collapsed, the colleague tried to give first aid, but he did not answer," said Yookonhaew, [] 19659007] "We took him to room three and we retried the resuscitation, but he remained unconscious." But Gunan's death highlights the danger of rescue efforts. When asked how the boys would leave the cave safely, if an experienced diver did not do it, Yookonhaew said that he would take extra precautionary measures with the children.
The authorities say that we are worried about the steady decline in oxygen levels in the room where boys are trapped with the coach.
This decrease is due to the large number of people working inside the cave to allow rescue, said Narongsak Osotthanakorn, governor of Chiang Rai Province. Officials are now working to install a 5 km cable into the cave to supply the group with oxygen.
The boys' parents wait for help. The army will try to install a cable to allow families to communicate with young people.
BBC News reporter Sophie Long, who is in Chiang Rai, points out that rescue executives are trained to work in high-risk environments and to cope with deaths such as the death of Gunan.
But she tells us that the atmosphere has changed since the episode because the risks have become even more obvious. Boys may not be aware of the diver's death because one of the main concerns is to protect not only their physical health but also their mental health.
This Friday, the priority will be to connect a fiber optic cable that will allow contact between young people and families.
Boys receive food and medical care, but there is concern over heavy rains on Sunday.
Authorities are working to find a way to keep the group safe.
The military evacuated the water from the cave, but if they can not sufficiently lower the water level to walk or swim, there are only two rescue options left: learn boys to dive with oxygen or wait for months until the end of the rainy season.
The risk of waiting is that the rain water, through the holes in the cave and the streams of water that pbad through the mountain, will completely flood the room where the boys have found refuge.
