RIO – In Rio, the first month of the year broke all records in terms of heating. The average maximum temperature was the highest in history, 37.4 ° C, according to Climatempo. The thermal sensation reached 50 °. The result of intensive use of air conditioning begins to appear on the beads. Advertiser Gabriel Franco, for example, expects a 50% increase in the value of the bill. The survey conducted by the Brazilian Institute for Consumer Protection (Idec) for GLOBO shows, however, that it is possible to reduce the impact on the account with the right choice of the device.
When evaluating six 9,000 BTU equipment, all categorized as A, maximum mark of the Brazilian Labeling Program (PBE), the difference between the most efficient and the least effective consumptions can exceed R $ 1,600 in 5 years, considering the use of eight hours a day.
– The examination of labels is not enough to make a good choice. Today, about 80% are clbadified as Category A, but the difference in consumption between them is important – warns Clauber Leite, energy researcher at Idec.
Milk however draws attention to the fact that it is not always easy to know what is the consumption of the device. In addition, the researcher criticizes the fact that the Brazilian parameter for measuring the total cooling capacity of an appliance and the energy it consumes (the energy efficiency coefficient) is lower than that used in other appliances. countries, such as Japan, where it is 6, 5 W / W (watts of heat generated per watt of energy consumed), China, 6 W / W and United States (4.6 W / W). Here, the coefficient of the best device is 4.74 W / W, says Idec.
Marcos Borges, coordinator of Inmetro's PBE program, says that a study is underway to help change the consumption profile of air conditioners. This is the Kigali project, the result of an international agreement that brings together manufacturers, public authorities, universities and NGOs in Brazil.
– From this project, we must change the test method of the devices, which will allow a better comparison with those of other countries. The study will also serve as a basis for the new clbadification. The idea is to make a leap of efficiency.

Camila Borges, from the Institute for Climate and Society, who coordinates the project in the country, explains that improving the efficiency of equipment will reduce the impact on the accounts and on the energy matrix:
– We badyze the impact on the consumer price for the manufacturer and its impact on the national electricity system.
Toshio Murakami, chairman of Abrava's national residential air-conditioning department, said the industry was working to improve efficiency. But he warns that the impact on the account can be reduced with proper use of the device:
– The use of air conditioning without filter cleaning increases energy consumption by 30%. Keeping the equipment at 17 degrees also consumes more. Cooling is faster at this temperature, but comfort is at 23 °.
At home, journalist Gabriel Franco has adopted measures to reduce the impact of air on the national budget.
– We try to offset the use of air conditioning with cold baths to reduce gas consumption and avoid leaving the lights on. But at bedtime, two phones are connected all night, explains Franco, who shares the apartment with a friend.
Calculate your consumption
Milk, from Idec, points out that changes usually reduce the final value of the bill.
– Idec is fighting for more efficient devices, but it's useless if we do not change our habits. If I leave the refrigerator door open or the air is open unnecessarily, I am wasting energy.
Consulted, Philco, LG and Electrolux did not respond to the results of the investigation. Pioneer do Brasil said that it only dealt with automotive equipment, its air conditioners are imported. Gree is satisfied with the result of the economy.
