Congo – The number of Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo reached 428, of which 380 confirmed and 48 clbadified as probable. According to an epidemiological bulletin published Saturday by the World Health Organization (WHO), at least 248 deaths due to the disease were recorded in the African country.

The figures also show that 66 cases considered as suspects are the subject of an investigation. According to Peter Salama, WHO's Deputy Director General for Emergency Preparedness, it is already the second most important Ebola epidemic in history, many families losing loved ones.

"WHO and its partners will continue to work together in the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and will do whatever is necessary to end this epidemic."

History

The most devastating outbreak in Ebola was reported globally in March 2014, with cases dating back to December 2013 in Guinea Conakry. Almost two years later, in January 2016, WHO declared the end of this epidemic, which claimed the lives of 11,300 people and infected more than 28,500.

The disease

The Ebola virus is transmitted through direct contact with the blood and body fluids of infected persons, causes haemorrhagic fever and can reach a 90% mortality rate if it is not treated on time.
