Facebook reported on Monday that it was informing more than 800,000 users of a software error that temporarily unblocked unwanted people on the social network and its messenger service.
The error was active between May 29 and May 29. June 5 and has been repaired, according to Facebook, which is trying to recover the trust of its users after the scandal involving Cambridge Analytica.
"We know that the ability to block someone is important," acknowledged the group's privacy chief, Erin Egan, in his blog. "We want to apologize and explain what happened."
The ability to block someone on Facebook prevents it from displaying posts in a profile, logging in as friends, or starting a conversation in Messenger.
"There are many reasons people block others on Facebook," said Egan. "It may be that your relationship has changed or you want to get away from someone who has published content that they do not like."
Some users also block for harsher reasons, such as harbadment or intimidation, Egan said.
The bug in the software has restored no connection with hacked friends on the social network, according to Facebook.
