More than 2,000 firefighters fight a major forest fire in northern California, waiting for a hot weekend to spread the flames.
The "Fire County" burned Tuesday 283 km2. According to the authorities, the counties of Napa and Yolo contained only 5%, which asked the inhabitants of the region to be ready to leave the site if the conditions worsened.
The fire began Saturday about 80 km west of Sacramento, California
Smoke and ashes gave an orange tinge to the sky, prompting the fire department from San Francisco to issue an air quality alert on Sunday, urging the elderly, infants, and heart patients to avoid physical activity.
State firefighters also fought another fire, the Pawnee. Tricia Austin, spokesman for the fire brigade, told AFP that the Pawnee flames had affected an area of 60.2 km2 in Lake County, north of San Francisco, destroying 22 structures. According to Austin, the fire should be controlled by the end of the week.
The spokeswoman said the forest fire season, which normally runs from September to October, began earlier this year than usual.
Authorities await further shooting during the July 4th, Independence Day of the United States, where many people turn on illegal fireworks.
