BRASILIA – One day after the extraordinary Minister of Transition, Onyx Lorenzoni, says that the National Indian Foundation
(Funai)
must be transferred from the Department of Justice to
Agriculture,
the elected president
Jair Bolsonaro
said that the body could go to the
Ministry of Citizenship,
but pointed out that the problem is not defined.
– Funai goes somewhere. Agriculture, I do not think so. You can go there for social action, "said Bolsonaro, who later corrected it and said he was referring to the Citizenship file, which will be created.
On Monday,
Onyx had stated that Funai tended to be transferred to agriculture
and that the idea is to have a new approach in the region.
– It is being defined, but it must go to agriculture – said Onyx. – We have areas of action, Funai is just one of them who needs a new direction. Brazil has been caring for its Indians for many years through NGOs, who do not always do a better job. The indigenous population reiterated that they wanted their freedom, their independence, the maintenance of their traditions, but they did not necessarily want to stay in the situation where many indigenous communities are in Brazil.
