Inflation reaches 1.26% in June after the truckers strike – International

The May truckers' strike sped up Brazilian inflation in June, which reached 1.26%, its highest level since January 2016, reported Friday the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE)

. The sectors that have experienced the highest index (IPCA) are housing (2.48%), food and beverages (2.03%) and transportation (1.58%).

In animal feed, chicken prices climbed (from -0.99% in May to 8.02% in June), as did meat (from -0.38% to 4.60%) and milk

The price of electric power rose 7.93%, more than double the May 3.53%.

The IPCA had already increased from 0.22% in April to 0.40% in May, reflecting the shortage of fuel, inputs and food caused by truckers' strikes against prices diesel, which paralyzed the country during the last ten days of May

During the first six months of the year, the IPCA reached 2.60%, compared to 1.18% over the same period last year

. Strike impact also appeared over the cumulative 12-month period, which reached 4.39% in June, from 2.86% in the same period in May.

Even with the decline, the IPCA is in the Central Bank's 4.5% targets this year, with a 1.5-point margin up or down.

Market expectations of inflation of 4.03% this year, according to the latest Focus survey conducted weekly by the Central Bank.

In 2017, the price increase was 2.95%.
