Israel will continue to provide humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees trying to escape the war but will not receive any civilian on their territory, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday.
Israel sent tons of food, clothing and medicine to refugee civilians in the Syrian part of the Golan Heights after they fled fighting in southern Syria.
"We will continue to defend our borders, offering humanitarian aid for as long as possible, but we will not allow entry into our territory," Netanyahu told reporters before the weekly meeting. of the cabinet.
He reiterated Israel's request to Iran to withdraw militarily from Syria, which he considers a priority for his country.
Since 1967, Israel has occupied part of the Golan Heights on the border between the two countries, which are still in a state of war.
Syrian civilians flee an offensive by the regime of Bashar al-Assad and his allies that began on June 19 to retake rebel areas in the southern Syrian province of Deraa.
The Israeli army announced that it had reinforced its troops in the Israeli part of the Golan to "cope with what is happening on the other side of the border".
The statement states that "the policy of non-intervention in the Syrian conflict remains unchanged as long as Israeli sovereignty is not in question or its citizens are not threatened."
