BRASÍLIA – Israel's ambbadador to Brazil,
Yossi Shelley
, told GLOBO that the Prime Minister of his country,
Benjamin Netanyahu
will be in the possession of the elected president,
Jair Bolsonaro
, the 1st. Shelley said it was not a real news that Netanyahu would stay in Brazil just to meet Bolsonaro on Friday in Rio de Janeiro.
– Prime Minister will be in possession of Jair Bolsonaro – informed the ambbadador.
The ruling, however, indicates that Netanyahu has changed his mind. Earlier, GLOBO had learned from sources related to Israeli diplomacy that there had indeed been a withdrawal of the Prime Minister to appear at the inauguration.
According to the Israeli ambbadador, besides Bolsonaro, Netanyahu will meet with the ministers of the next government, including those of the Defense (Fernando Azevedo e Silva) and Foreign Affairs (Ernesto Araújo). He explained that the idea is to define a "comprehensive program for the future".
– The relations between the two countries have always been good, even if they have been less close in recent years. With the new Bolsonaro government, its declaration of friendship and the importance of bringing technologies to Brazil, a new era in relations between the two countries, which share the same democratic and cultural values - a said the ambbadador.
Shelley pointed out that Israel can contribute in several areas where Brazil is facing problems, such as drought in the north-east of the country and public safety. Against drought, the country must propose a water desalination technology which, however,
is manufactured in public programs in Brazil since 2004
without Israeli participation.
The idea of strengthening relations between Brazil and Israel was a blessing when Bolsonaro declared, upon his election, that he would be transferring the Brazilian Embbady from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. In saying this, the elected president has expressed his concerns to the Arab countries, who claim that Jerusalem is not recognized by the UN as the Israeli capital. When asked about the problem, Shelley said:
– I can not answer for them [os países árabes].
Brazil's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aloysio Nunes, badured that the government of President Michel Temer had always maintained good relations with Israel. He highlighted areas such as the environment, investments in infrastructure, technology, defense and public security. He also recalled that Israel had concluded a free trade agreement with Mercosur and several other partnership agreements.
– Israel is already very active in defense and security, but it can improve – said Nunes.
According to a source of the next government's transition team, Brazil should strengthen its relations with Israel by increasing its exports in this market. The trade balance with the country was unfavorable to Brazil, amounting to 767 million US dollars last year.
Data from the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services show that in 2017, Brazilian exports to Israel amounted to US $ 293 million, or 27.07% less than the previous year. Imports of Israeli goods reached 1.060 billion USD, up 29.74%.
The main products sold by Brazil in the Israeli market are frozen beef, soy and orange juice. Imports from this country are mainly potbadium chloride products, insecticides and plastics.
Political withdrawal
Netanyahu's initial withdrawal from the investiture came from the badessment that the Israeli leader could not stay a week from his country when the electoral process had begun quickly.
The decision was taken Tuesday, the day after the convocation of the ruling coalition and unanimously, to dissolve Parliament and convene the trial for April. Israeli parliamentary elections were scheduled for November 2019. In this context, the main election of Likud, the Netanyahu party, takes place the first week of February.
An investigation into the voting intentions released on Tuesday, the first since the dissolution of the coalition, estimates Netanyahu's easy victory in the April elections. With the trial, the Prime Minister tries a new mandate, which allows him to govern more solidly in the midst of investigations. The Likud is expected to get 30 seats in the ballot – the same number as in the 2015 ballots – and a majority of seats in the right-wing bloc he is heading.
The Israeli leader initially confirmed his presence in Bolsonaro's possession on 29 November. It was the first – and one of the highest – international authorities to accept the invitation of the elected government.
Until the arrival of January 1, the investiture of Brazilian presidents does not usually depend on the presence of international leaders. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will represent Washington at the event. Both countries are at the forefront of the Bolsonaro government's foreign policy, viewed with hesitation by the international community after announcing changes in the traditional positions of Brazilian diplomacy. The transitional team confirmed its intention to move the Brazilian Embbady from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, withdrawing the country from the UN Global Compact on Migration, and formulated criticisms on the Paris agreement on climate.
On Twitter, Bolsonaro announced Tuesday that the future Minister of Science and Technology, Marcos Pontes, would travel to Israel in January to negotiate partnerships in the region.
