Japan is preparing to resume whaling

The information was published Thursday (20) by the news agency " Kyodo News " citing government sources.

The release of Japan from the IWC is scheduled for 2019 and will be announced later this year. The Japanese government plans to resume whaling only in the seas near Japan and its exclusive economic zone. Whales failed when countries opposed to this practice rejected a Japanese proposal to hunt.

Japan suspended commercial whaling in 1982 in accordance with the moratorium adopted by the IWC. Even in this case, the country has been hunting whales in the Southern Ocean since 1987 for what it calls "scientific research", but has been criticized internationally as a disguise for commercial purposes.

Japan has long argued that most whale species are not endangered and that eating of the animal is an important part of the country's culinary culture, records "Reuters".
