A federal judge in Chicago ordered the immediate release of Brazilian boy Diogo, who was separated from his mother, Lidia Karina Souza, at the United States border with Mexico on May 29, according to the Associated Press.
Judge Manish Shah said Thursday that Lidia could have custody of Diogo, who spent four weeks in an accommodation facility in Chicago. The mother, who applied for asylum in the country, was released from an immigration detention center in Texas on June 9.
After spending three weeks staying in touch only by phone, Karina was able to see Diogo for the first time last night. According to the lawyer Jeff Goldman, she gave him food, clothes and toys. Accompanied by a lawyer from his office, his mother found that although sad, Diogo was in good health and looked good.
The two were separated on May 29, thanks to Donald Trump's zero tolerance policy against illegal immigrants when they crossed the United States border. Lidia entered the country in search of asylum, but for not having done so in a suitable position, was considered an illegal immigrant and detained.
The 27-year-old was released on June 9 and has been with relatives in Mbadachusetts since.
