After nine hours of negotiations, leaders of the European Union agreed to help neighboring countries of the continent, particularly Italy, by redistributing some of the rescued migrants to the Mediterranean – also long as they are detained.
In parallel, the EU announced that it would set up reception centers in North African countries, where most of the migrants rescued at sea would be fired. These centers, known as "landing platforms", will be administered jointly with UN agencies, which will ensure their security pending their repatriation or resettlement in European countries.
The effort aims to reduce the flow of immigrants to the continent, which has favored the emergence and strengthening of populist parties, particularly in Germany, where Chancellor Angela Merkel is subject to strong pressures.
"Italy is no longer alone," Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said at the end of the meeting. French President Emmanuel Macron, who played a key role in mediating the agreement, said the pact was an important step.
