The office of social communication of the presidency announced that President Michel Temer had signed Friday (14) the decree of extradition of Cesare Battisti. According to the federal police, Battisti is in an "uncertain" place and is considered a fugitive.
According to Temer's opinion, the decree is to be published later this Friday, in an additional edition of the "Official Journal of the Union".
On Thursday, Minister Luiz Fux of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) ordered the arrest of the Italian following a request from Interpol, paving the way for to extradition. Battisti's defense appealed and, after the signing of the decree by Temer, reiterated the client's request for extradition.
Interpol accuses Battisti of committing crimes of monetary fraud and money laundering.
Cesare Battisti was convicted of four homicides in Italy in the 1970s ( see details below ).
In 2007, Italy asked for her extradition and, at the end of 2009, the STF granted this request, leaving the last word to the President of the Republic. At the time, the then president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, had denied extradition.
In the past, the Italian government had asked President Michel Temer to reconsider Brazil's decision regarding Battisti.
