Percentage of women with diabetes in Fortaleza increases by 84% in 11 years | Ceará

The percentage of men diagnosed with diabetes also increased by 56.8% over the same period. In general, Fortaleza appears as one of the capitals with a high percentage of people with the disease, with 7.6%.

In comparison with other capitals, the male population of Fortaleza had one of the highest rates of medical diagnosis of diabetes in 2017. Among women, the capital of Ceará was the sixth highest percentage of the disease (8.1%), being behind Vitória, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Porto Velho and São Paulo.

Between 2010 and 2016, diabetes killed 15,799 people in Ceará. According to the Mortality Information System, the number remained stable over the period: 2,136 deaths in 2010 and 2,125 in 2016. Hospital Information System data indicate that the number of hospitalizations increased from 5,324 in 2010 to 4,522 in 2016.

Diabetes is responsible for complications such as cardiovascular disease, dialysis for chronic renal failure, and lower limb amputations surgery.
