Cesare Battisti's house in Cananéia, on the south coast of São Paulo, was closed. But this Saturday (15), one of his friends was there with the keys. He started the car and let our team take pictures inside. The friend said that he had taken Battisti by car two weeks ago to São Paulo and that the Italian would go to Rio de Janeiro.

"It was the last time we met and I did not get in touch with him, I do not know how he reacted to this latest news," said his friend.

Temer's decree authorizes the extradition of Cesare Battisti as soon as he is arrested. In a social network, the President of Italy, Sergio Matarella, thanked the decision made by Michel Temer.

Mr President, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for his decision on the case of the Italian citizen Cesare Battisti, who has been definitively convicted of very serious crimes by the Italian courts and has up to present been dismissed from the execution of the sentences handed down.

The defense attorney says that he does not know when he will surrender.

The federal police monitored the Italian since 2017, when he was arrested while attempting to cross the border with Bolivia.

Battisti was sentenced to life imprisonment in Italy in the 1970s for four homicides. In 2007, Italy requested extradition. In 2010, the Federal Supreme Court authorized extradition, but left the last word to the President of the Republic and the then President, Lula, refused extradition on the last day of his mandate. Thus, Battisti came to live freely in Brazil.

The Italian Government appealed. In 2017, the supreme rapporteur, Minister Luiz Fux, granted an injunction to prevent Battisti from being deported. Thursday, Fux revoked this injunction. He said that it was up to the president to extradite or not, because political decisions are not in competition with the judiciary.

President-elect Jair Bolsonaro has already indicated that he was also in favor of extradition.
