A group of 159 undocumented migrants from Central America, including 62 minors, were rescued from a building located in a rural area of central Mexico where they were arrested in captivity by a gang of Mexicans and Guatemalans.
The rescue took place in Acajete, in the state of Puebla, about 155 km from Mexico City. Police followed for two weeks the track of two suspicious vehicles.
Occupants of both vehicles were approached during an inspection and attempted to escape, but were subsequently arrested. They even tried to bribe the police, but a woman then asked for help at a nearby house, which prompted the police to inspect the property.
"When he approached, the police discovered four other people who were trying to escape." People of different nationalities were inside the building, "he said. Fernando Rosales, Secretary of State for Public Security, told the press.
"The captives claimed to have paid 45,000 pesos ($ 2,300) to be taken to Tijuana (border with the United States)," he added.
Rosales reported that eight men had been deprived of their liberty, including four from the state of Chiapas (southern) and four from Guatemala. All were arrested.
The migrants were transferred to a police station to receive food and clothing and then taken to the prosecution. Everyone is in good health.
