The information and communication technology supplement of the ongoing National Household Survey (Continuous Population Survey) revealed that between 2016 and 2017, the Pay TV had slightly decreased. In the last quarter of last year, 32.8% of TV households had contracts with companies providing access to cable, satellite or other technology. This percentage was 33.7% for the same period in 2016.

In 55.3% of households with television, pay television was not contracted in 2017 because it was considered expensive. In 39.8% of cases, the alleged reason was a lack of interest. "Together, these two reasons already covered 95.1% of households with television without this service," says the publication. In only 1.6% of households, it was alleged that recruitment was not due to the lack of pay-TV availability in the region.

Part of this lack of interest may be related to the preference for streaming services such as Netflix. The supplement revealed that 81.8% of Brazilians who used the Internet in 2017 had one of the goals of watching videos, including programs, series and movies. This percentage was 74.6% in 2016, which means a growth of 7.2 percentage points. "More and more people are using television, not just for traditional TV programs," says Adriana Beringuy, an badyst at the IBGE's Coordination of Labor and Income. . She believes that smart TVs, which allow connection to the Web, have gained more and more space in the market. According to the survey, in the last quarter of 2017, 16.3% of the Brazilian population aged 10 years or older was using the Internet on television. This percentage was 11.3% in 1966.
