For 40 minutes, according to the authorities, three masked suspects held a father, a mother and their two young children hostage.
They demanded money that the father said he did not have, and then they beat him for not giving them what they wanted.
Even more troubling, authorities in the Houston suburbs claim that the invaders turned against one of the children, a 7-year-old boy, torturing him in a bathtub filled with hot water.
The frozen cries of family members can be heard in a recording done at home in Richmond, Texas on Monday morning.
"You can hear the boy screaming, and then you can hear them when they fill this tub with water," Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls told reporters. press conference.

The suspects used the boy as a lever to force the father to tell them where he kept his money, the authorities said. They took him to the bath that they had filled with hot water and soaked him several times.
"How much money would we need to torture a 7-year-old child? No money," Fort Bend County Sheriff's Detective Justin White said at a press conference Tuesday. "But, you know, they do it here." Investigators say the suspects set their sights on the family's home in Richmond, southwest of Houston, but could only speculate on why they were targeting the victims.
The father owns a small business in the area, the authorities told reporters, and the invaders appeared to be familiar with the house.
"For whatever reason we do not know right now, they thought there was a lot of money in this house," White said, refusing to share more details.
Nehls, the sheriff, said the family was awakened by a loud noise around 3 am Monday. A surveillance video taken from outside the house showed the three suspects a few seconds before they were kicking the door. They pistol-badped the father as they demanded money, leaving a bloody gash on his head.
"And the father did not stop saying," There is no money. There is no money here. You could take my jewels. You could take other things. Take the car, but we do not have money, "Nehls said, describing the audio.
Nehls said that "did not sit well" with the suspects, so they lit the eldest son of the man, the 7-year-old.
After holding the boy under the water, one of the suspects walked him into the living room and kitchen to try and find the money, authorities said.
"It's just awful to think that we have three people trying to earn a little more money and that they're going to do it to a young man like that, a kid," he said. Nehls. "How dare you."
Sheriff officials said that the audio and surveillance video of the interior of the house has documented the 40-minute horror.
It is unclear how the audio was recorded, and officials said that they do not publish the records, citing the ongoing investigation. But still photos published by the department showed one of the suspects with his hand on the barefoot boy's shoulder while he was driving him to the salon.

One of the suspects, who was carrying a gun, was wearing a vintage Jordan jacket with white sleeves. Another was wearing an Adidas sweater with a white shirt with the word "CHANGE" printed on the front. The third suspect wore red sneakers.
Authorities said the group left with cell phones from the family. The victims went to an emergency care center, where the 911 was called.
Nehls said the boy had fluid in his lungs but that he was not suffering from water burns. He and his father were released from the hospital. The mother and the other child, aged 5, were not injured.
"I know that adults have already been beaten before, but I've never seen anyone in my career trying to use a boy to get information from the father," Nehls said.
The authorities have offered $ 25,000 to all those who can help them catch the three suspects with a fourth person who was their flight driver.
"They did not get what they wanted in this one, so when are they going to try another one?" White said. "And whose family is going to be next? To whom will the child be next?"
