The Russian Foreign Ministry said Saturday (5) that the United States had arrested a Russian citizen a few days after Moscow had arrested former USman Paul Whelan on suspicion of espionage.
Whelan was arrested by the Russian Federal Security Service on December 28. The family of the former navy says that he is innocent and that he was in Moscow because of a marriage.
The ministry said that the United States arrested Russian citizen Dmitry Makarenko in the Northern Mariana Islands on December 29 and drove him to Florida.
"Makarenko, born in 1979, arrived in Saipan Island with his wife, children and older relatives, and was arrested by the FBI at the airport shortly after his arrival. Secretary Mike Pompeo of the United States said this week that Washington had asked Moscow to explain the arrest of Whelan and that it would require his immediate return if the arrest had no plausible justification.
