Russia has signed a new nuclear cooperation agreement with Argentina, which is already negotiating with China on the construction of nuclear reactors.
The Russian reactor manufacturer Rosatom said in a statement that the two countries had signed a "strategic document" confirming the partnership in the field of nuclear energy at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires this weekend .
The document was signed by Rosatom's general manager, Alexey Likhachev, and the Argentine Minister of Energy, Javier Iguacel, at a ceremony attended by Russian presidents Vladimir Putin and Argentinian , Maurício Macri.
The agreement is not a nuclear reactor construction contract, but a basic agreement like the others that Russia has already signed with other countries.
Such agreements do not always result in indefinite contracts and are usually reconfirmed a few years apart. Russia has already signed other nuclear agreements with Argentina, the latest of which in 2015.
The most recent agreement comes shortly after the director of the agency National Investment Council had told Reuters last month that Argentina and China were seeking to conclude in a few days an agreement of up to $ 8 billion for the construction of a fourth nuclear power plant in Argentina.
