On the occasion of his 120th birthday, Santa Casa BH performed his first heart transplant. The surgery took place in January. José Valter Ferreira Nascimento, 64, has been fighting against Chagas disease since 2015.

Residing in Belo Horizonte since 1973, José has split his time between the capital and Felixlândia (where he practices). A native of the municipality of Catuji, north of Minas Gerais, he claims to have lost his quality of life since 2015, the year of diagnosis. "The family gets sick because we can not do anything else, I could not even talk, as I do now."

In December 2018, the drugs that José Valter was taking to control the disease stopped responding correctly and on the 25th, he was admitted to Santa Casa BH. The patient experienced a worsening of the clinical condition and was transferred to the USI the penultimate day of last year. The long-awaited heart arrived in January and the transplant was performed by teams of cardiovascular surgeons Dr. Carla de Oliveira and Dr. Marcelo Frédérique de Castro and cardiologist Dr. Sílvio Amadeu Andrade
