An international group of scientists has developed a regime that they believe will save lives, preserve the planet and feed the world's population. The recommendations were published in the scientific journal "Lancet".
From here 2050, we will have 10 billion humans inhabiting the Earth. How to feed as many mouths without destroying the resources of the planet? Today, 70% of drinking water is used in agriculture and the growing areas used by cattle threaten forests. To close this equation, 37 scientists from 16 countries have created a sustainable diet that feeds humanity without destroying the planet.
The main change is a drastic reduction in the consumption of animal protein. The daily portion of meat, for example, would only represent 14 grams. Anyone who prefers fish or chicken can eat twice as much. To complete: a glbad of milk and an egg. The rest of the protein comes from oleaginous fruits – like almonds and nuts – and legumes like beans.
The daily portion would be complete with rice or bread, vegetables rich in carbohydrates like potatoes, vegetables and green vegetables; and for dessert, fruits. All without exaggeration.
Walter Willett, a nutritionist at Harvard University, acknowledges that it would be impossible to persuade all of humanity to follow his diet. "But if everyone adhered, we could prevent 11 million premature deaths a year," he says.
Brent Loken, climate change expert, who participated in the study, said that it would be necessary to abandon the old habits: "I know you, Brazilians, love to eat red meat, but it will become a luxury. "
It's a chance to contribute to individual and planetary health. "Many people are wondering how they can save the planet, so changing your diet is probably the best way to help," says Harvard nutritionist.
