MESSINA, 08 JUL (ANSA) – An Irish military ship landed Saturday at the port of Messina, in southern Italy, with 106 people rescued in the Mediterranean, including 93 men and 11 miners and two women, a speaker.
The group was greeted by pro-home protesters, who wore red T-shirts as part of a national refugee advocacy campaign.
The rescue operation was coordinated by the Port Authority and the Red Cross and took place in Libyan territorial waters in the early hours of July 4 to 5, a few hours after the Inflatable dinghy in which forced migrants left Garabulli, on the coast of the African country.
The Italian Ministry of the Interior authorized the landing in Messina, but Matteo Salvini promised to present to the European Union a request for closure of the country's ports to international ships with foreigners.
The theme is to be discussed next Thursday (12) in Innsbruck, Austria, at an informal summit of ministers inside the bloc. "After stopping the ships of the NGOs [proibidos de atracar na Itália por Salvini] I will bring Thursday to the European table of Innsbruck the Italian request to block the arrival in our ports of the ships of the international missions currently present in the Mediterranean", he said.
Since the beginning of the year, 16,551 foreigners have entered Italy through the Mediterranean, down 77.39% from the same period last year. The country strengthened its policies for refugees and forced migrants after the inauguration of the new government, formed by the Movement's five-star anti-movement system (M5S) and Salvini's ultranationalist league.
