The city of São Paulo said in the afternoon of Wednesday (3) that there was no case of epidemic or confirmed measles residing in the city.

According to the municipal health department, the vaccination campaign against measles and poliomyelitis will be carried out in the municipality from 6 to 24 August, according to a decision of the Ministry of Health.

The case alleges that measles is underway in several European countries. The region of the Americas was considered free from acute viral disease in September 2016; However, since February of this year, Brazil has recorded the circulation of the measles virus (genotype D8, circulating in Venezuela since 2017) in the states of Roraima and Amazonas.

Measles and rubella have been the subject of integrated surveillance since 1999, which allows for early detection of cases and outbreaks as well as effective control measures. Both diseases are mandatory and the immediate notification, which must take place within 24 hours of taking charge.

Following the notification of a suspected case of measles, action is taken according to the current protocols of the Ministry of Health:

• Investigation of the Suspect Case: Research of Clinical and Laboratory Data with Patients care services;

• Epidemiological survey: evaluation of suspicious case movements to trigger measures to prevent new cases;

• Orientation of social isolation of the case by the maximum period of transmission;

• Selective vaccination; that is, vaccination of unvaccinated persons or with an incomplete vaccination schedule for the elderly after evaluation of the vaccine evidence of exposed persons in all places frequented by the suspect case, such as: residence, school, sanitary unit, transportation used while traveling during the period of transmission of the disease, etc .;

• Follow-up of all the presentations to check the appearance of new cases.

If confirmed, there is an extension of the vaccination called cleaning operation, which involves the exhaustive search of all sensitive subjects – unvaccinated or unvaccinated – by vaccination from house to house, households and collective institutions, such as as schools, kindergartens, construction sites, etc.

The action covers all the places usually attended by the confirmed case of measles, according to the criteria of the Ministry of Health.

Measles is an acute viral disease with high transmissibility potential that can occur with serious complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, otitis media, laryngotracheobronchitis, secondary bacterial infections, and late subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

The clinical picture is characterized by high fever, generalized maculopapular rash (red spots on the body), coughing, coryza and conjunctivitis. The rash occurs between the second and fourth day of the disease.

It is a disease of respiratory transmission, which occurs by secretions expelled by coughing, sneezing or speaking. In addition, contagion also occurs by dispersing aerosols with viral particles.
