A study conducted by researchers at the University of Manchester, Leeds Beckett University, Lancaster University and Edith Cowan University in Australia, reveals that one third of British students who declare themselves bads, gays and bibaduals have made a suicide attempt. A total of 707 young people aged 23 years on average were interviewed. Of these, 119 declared themselves homobaduals.

The research was published in the magazine "Archives of Suicide Research" and brings frightening data regarding the discrimination experienced by young homobaduals. According to the researchers, students in this population run a much higher risk of self harm and suicide attempts than heterobaduals.

Deficiency of self-esteem is a factor resulting from the discrimination experienced by homobaduals. "Youth mental health is a national concern and this study confirms that bad, gay or bibadual youth have high rates of suicide and self-flagellation compared to heterobadual youth," said Elizabeth McDermott of the # Lancaster University.

Gay students who completed an online questionnaire, 65% practiced non-suicidal self-mutilation for life, compared to 41% of heterobadual students. According to researcher Elizabeth McDermott, skin cuts, scrapes, burns and overdoses are the most commonly reported auto-aggression.

According to the study, 35% of students admitted to at least one suicide attempt.

The co-author of the study, Peter Taylor of the University of Manchester, says he is surprised by the results. "Surprisingly, there is little data on the psychological mechanisms that can explain the badociation between being bad, gay or bibadual and self-flagellation among British students," he concludes.
