The Ministry of Health published on Friday (01) the first bulletin on the situation of yellow fever in Paraná. Epidemiological alert 01/2019 – Yellow fever, also sent to all health regions of the state to "guarantee a rapid and effective response to the disease"

From last July to the end of January this year, 30 suspected cases of the disease have been reported, but only one has been confirmed as yellow fever; nine are still under investigation and the others have been thrown out. The confirmed case comes from Antonina, on the coast, but the likely site of infection of the virus is Guaraqueçaba, where the infected boy has made it. He is hospitalized in Paranaguá and should be released later this Friday.

According to the alert, the first symptoms of yellow fever are a sudden high fever, badociated with headaches, chills, nausea, vomiting, body pain and abdominal pain.

The bulletin points out that the problem is that these symptoms are confused with other diseases such as leptospirosis, influenza or dengue fever. This is one of the reasons why the population first takes the vaccine – available throughout Paraná – then consults a doctor as soon as the first symptoms appear in order to receive the necessary care .

Yellow fever can evolve rapidly. In about 10% of cases, there are severe forms with jaundice (yellowing of the skin), severe abdominal pain, bleeding from the digestive system (vomiting or bloody stools), skin or urine and renal failure [19659003] The first case in Paraná was confirmed on January 29, but the Department of Health had previously activated the Emergency Health Operations Center (COES) to coordinate response and institutional information.

Today, COES is stepping up its activities in the municipalities of the 1 st and 2 nd health regions, located on the coast (7) and in the metropolitan area of Curitiba (29). "But the recommendation is that the entire population of Paraná, between 9 months and 59 years, take the vaccine," warns the director of the Paraná Epidemiological Center, João Luís Crivellaro. The alert is valid for those who have never been vaccinated, the dose against yellow fever having permanent validity.

Immunization intensification strategies were conducted throughout the state of Paraná, with priority in these two regions and active selective research. populations most at risk.
