Taiwan President Calls for International Support to Defend Democracy | World

Tsai's request was made a few days after Chinese President Xi Jinping declared that no one could change the fact that Taiwan was part of China and that people on both sides wanted a "reunification".

"We hope that the international community will take this seriously, express its support and help us," Tsai told Taipei in the capital, citing China's threats to use force to regain control from the island.

If the international community does not support a threatened democratic country, "we can ask which country will be next," she said.

Taiwan is the most delicate issue for China, which claims the island as its territory. Xi Jinping has increased pressure on the nation since Tsai, a member of the pro-independence Progressive Democratic Party, took office in 2016.

Chinese President said Wednesday that China has the right to use force regain control of the island, but this will turn into a peaceful "reunification".
