The rabies vaccination campaign begins this Thursday (28) in the federal district. In the first two days of action, doses will be available at the Veterinary Hospital of Brasília.

Thereafter, it will be possible to vaccinate pets at fixed stations – three weekends in July, August and September – or at traveling stations that will travel to the Federal District on working days. The campaign ends on September 29th.

The goal this year is to vaccinate 270,000 dogs and cats. The number corresponds to 80% of the population of domestic animals registered in the federal capital. The percentage, according to the GDF, is "what is needed to create a barrier against the spread of the disease in humans."

"The teams are going with Environmental Safety Vehicles from the Department of Health to visit places such as condominiums," said Rafael Almeida, director of environmental health monitoring.

If a family can not access mobile health care, the government also intends to keep vaccination in physical positions for three weekends.

On 21 and 29 September, doses will be available in health facilities in urban areas. Until this publication, the addresses had not been filled in. On August 25, the service will be in rural areas.

According to forecasts, 80 stations will be open each weekend until the end of the campaign. The sites will be posted on the Ministry of Health website the previous days.

According to the government, rabies is a "controlled" disease in Mexico City. Despite this, the vaccine is necessary because it is the only form of prevention. The virus is 100% lethal to humans and the main means of transmission is the bite of animals, especially dogs and cats.

The only case of the disease in humans in FD occurred in 1978, but the infection in dogs and cats was recorded on other occasions – between 2000 and 2001, for example .

If there is suspicion of contagion in an animal, there is no express recommendation that the animal be sacrificed. The guideline is to let you watch for ten days in a safe place, to avoid attacks on people or other insects.

If observation is not possible, the pet should be directed to the kennel of environmental health monitoring, from the Ministry of Health, in the housing sector North West Collective 4.

See the symptoms of rabies in dogs and cats:

  • Aggression, with attempts to bite people, animals and objects
  • Sadness, with the search for dark places
  • Change of heart rhythm
  • Excessive salivation, with open mouth constantly
  • Refusal of food and water due to difficulty swallowing, with gagging
  • Loss of motor coordination
  • convulsions
  • Paralysis on the hind legs
  • Total paralysis
