A discovery made by scientists from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro opened a promising avenue for curing Alzheimer's disease. The starting point is physical exercise.

Gymnastics in the pool one hour a day, five times a week. This is the treatment that improves the performance of the mice during the memory test. It is normal that they are curious and that they approach the objects that they see for the first time. If they choose to play with the pieces with which they have been in contact before, that 's because they' re not able to memorize and so they do not learn.

The guinea pigs of India have Alzheimer's disease and scientists have noticed that after five weeks of swimming training, the harmful effects of the disease have virtually disappeared. The mice were successful with maximum marks on all memory tests.

The person responsible for behavior change is a hormone discovered six years ago: irisine. It occurs in the muscles, with the stimulation of physical activity, and falls into the blood. Scientists were already aware of its effect on reducing fat stores. This new study shows the power of irisin when it reaches the brain.

It strengthens synapses, which are extensions of neurons, responsible for the connection between cells – impaired function of people with Alzheimer's disease. The irisine favors this connection and the information is saved in the memory.

Some guinea pigs produced irisin during activity. Another group received a synthetic substance that mimics the hormone. The results were the same.

The study published Monday (7) in the journal "Nature medicine" was developed by 20 researchers from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and five foreign collaborators.

This is a promise of treatment. A remedy containing this hormone can reverse the harmful effects of Alzheimer's disease. But the manufacture of the drug can be delayed, it still depends on the tests on humans. And we can start producing this hormone now. Just do not stay still.

"This new hormone could form the basis of a future cure, just as, for example, insulin is currently a cure for diabetes," said neuroscientist Sérgio Ferreira.

"Physical exercise induces the production of irisin in our body, so we can use that in our favor to avoid memory loss and Alzheimer's disease in the future", explained the neuroscientist Mychael Lourenço.
