The leaders of Ethiopia and Eritrea hold a historic meeting

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki held the first meeting between leaders of the two countries on Sunday (8).
The meeting, in a friendly atmosphere, took place in Asmara, capital of Eritrea, where Afewerki welcomed Ahmed with a hug. The crowd danced and sang in honor of the two leaders and displayed flags of both nations through the streets of the city.
The visit comes a month after the Ethiopian Prime Minister fully accepted the terms of a peace agreement signed in Algeria in 2000 but has never entered into force.
Independent of Ethiopia since 1993, Eritrea entered into a war with the neighboring country in 1998 for possession of the Badme area, which would help Asmara gain economic independence, but represented the Access from Addis Ababa to the Red Sea.
In December 2000, after the death of 70,000 to 100,000 people in the conflict, Afewerki and Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi signed a peace agreement in Algiers. Ethiopia, however, maintained a military presence in Badme, which was recommended as part of Eritrea by an international commission of the UN in 2002.
Ahmed is in power since early April and has shown its willingness to stabilize his country, affected by serious economic difficulties, a heavy external debt and rare foreign investments.
Another sign is the recent repeal of the state of emergency that has been in effect since February because of protests that overthrew former Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. (F, b, e, v, n, t, s) {if (f.fbq) returns: n = f.fbq = function () {n. callMethod?
