The first official data of the referendum convened by the President Martín Vizcarra indicated that 79.24% votes were in favor of the end of the re-election of parliamentarians.
The proposal to reinstate the bicameral system in Congress, requested by Vizcarra, was rejected by 88.66% votes.
For Vizcarra, the referendum "marks the beginning of a change we are seeking for Peru and all Peruvians," he said.
Vizcarra took office after the resignation of Pedro Pablo Kuczynski in March and has seen his popularity increase since he's engaged primarily in the fight against corruption.
The current Peruvian President even threatened to dissolve the Congress if there was no plebiscite.
