The Civilian Metropolitan Guard (GCM) used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse a demonstration against the social security reform that is being voted on at the São Paulo City Hall on Wednesday (26). After the withdrawal of the issue, the bill was discussed in plenary and was voted in the first round last Saturday (22). The vote was marked by server demonstrations and riots in the House.
The Metropolitan Civil Guard was activated to remove protesters from the plenary session. City Councilor Eduardo Suplicy (PT) was placed between the officers and a servant during his withdrawal from the plenary. The meeting was adjourned and the public hearing resumed.
Earlier, the public hearing was stopped following a discussion and a back-and-forth that had started between advisers Fernando Holiday (DEM) and Toninho Vespoli. Holiday attempted to interrupt the speech of Councilor Samia Bomfim (PSOL), saying that she had exceeded the deadline. GCM intervened and the debate resumed.
Due to the controversy, the PL procedure was repeatedly delayed throughout the year and was marked by clashes. In March, a demonstration ended with police repression and injured teachers. Since then, city councilors and union representatives have been trying to get the vote pbaded.
